Raised Catholic, I was taught that “abortion is murder.” That life is sacred. And then I grew up.
I have nothing against the Catholic Church stating that abortion is wrong. That human life begins at the moment of conception. I am against those who would seek to impose their beliefs on others. Personally, I’m neither “for” nor “against” abortion. I believe people should be free to make choices that are right for them. In short, a pregnant woman should have a right to choose, in consultation with anyone who can help her make the choice that’s best for her.
The choice to have an abortion is rarely easy for any woman. That choice shouldn’t be constrained or regulated by the government or other agencies. A right to privacy should and must include a right to control one’s own body, one’s own health, one’s own future. That’s what I believe.
The Democratic Party has had several golden opportunities to codify Roe v. Wade into law. Perhaps the best opportunity came in 2008-09. Barack Obama, running as a presidential candidate, promised his first priority if he won the presidency would be to codify Roe v. Wade into law. He reneged on that promise. Democrats had a super-majority in 2009. They could have easily fulfilled Obama’s promise to women. But the newly minted president was far more concerned with the health of U.S. banks than he was with the health of women, so nothing happened.
Joe Biden has claimed he also supports the codification of Roe v. Wade. Of course, he has done nothing of substance to make this happen. It’s all just lip service, empty words, coming from a man who’s still proud to say he’s Catholic.
All this is a preamble to this story that I saw in my CNN feed this morning:
Today marks the 51st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision which granted Americans the federal constitutional right to an abortion. Then in 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the law, ruling abortion rights should be determined by states. The Biden administration plans to hit the airwaves in battleground states this week with its first abortion-focused ad of the year, featuring stark, emotional testimony from a woman personally affected by a state abortion ban who lays the blame directly on former President Donald Trump. The push marks the campaign's first organized effort to emphasize the issue, seeking to further galvanize voters around reproductive rights in the first presidential election after the Supreme Court's landmark decision.
The blatant hypocrisy of Democratic leaders on abortion galls me. They want to use it as an issue to “galvanize voters,” but they don’t want to act to legalize abortion. It’s just another issue that can be used to bash Donald Trump.
Sure, go ahead and bash Trump. But the blame for the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade should be put squarely on the dishonest shoulders of Barack Obama and his vice president, Joe Biden. When they could have acted, they did nothing. And now, once again, the Democrats are using the abortion issue to raise money.
Shame on them.
If there is one point I would like to get across during my lifetime it is that the Democrats are just Blue-colored Republicans. There are no serious policy differences. It really is a uniparty, and that party is ultra-conservative. From war to vulture capitalism, they are in lockstep and any Blue Team voter who thinks differently just hasn't paid any attention to what the Blue Team does when in office. Please folks, stop listening to the Democrats and just pay attention to what they do, and what they refuse to do. Then it will be clear, they are all on board with everything wrong with this world.
The Democratic Party is nothing if not shameless hypocrites on numerous issues--abortion rights, war-making, raising the minimum wage, creating a fair and just tax system, eliminating nuclear weapons, making health insurance a human right, ending financial speculation and controlling the banks, etc. They are all talk and no action. The two parties are totally corrupt and rotten to the core. They battle each other simply to gain control of the levers of power to enrich themselves and their corporate donors. It's time to reveal and umask this grotesque charade that we are forced to go through every four years that, in the end, just further entrenches the corruption and rot.
