My response as a biased German who received first hand information from his father about WW I, its ending and the Weimar’s political problems, I would just say beware of falls comparisons. Yes, there was a Dolschstoss myth among the followers of Hitler and Ludendorff. They were always a fringe movement. Whatever Ludendorff and Hindenburg wrote about WW I was of no political importance during the Weimar Republic. What my dad’s generation resented was America’s hypocritical position (neutrality) during the war (remember the Sinking of the Lusitania), its decision to rescue a bankrupt Britain and France with declaring war against Germany, Wilson’s betrayal of his Fourteen Points and most importantly for not preventing the passage of the disgusting Versailles Treaty. If a metaphor of a Dolschstoss can be used than it should be in explaining how Hitler actually became a dictator. Contrary to popular belief he never received a democratic mandate. In the last free election 63% of the German electorate voted against the NSDAP. It was the conservative elite of national and international elites which induced Hindenburg to appoint Hitler chancellor. The conservative and liberal parties voted in the Reichstag for The Ermächtigungsgesetz (Enabling Act) in March 1933. The Communist Party had been outlawed because of the Reichstag burning (it was blamed on the Communists) and the Social Democrats (my family’s party) didn’t have enough votes to prevent the passage. The legend of Hitler’s democratic election is still quite common. My simple conclusion is that as far as German history in the twentieth century is concerned the Dolschstoss myth played no political role.

I want to suggest something further, that post-WWII, particularly with Paul Nitze and NSC-68, this country has adopted an uber-militarized Big Stick approach to foreign relations, more aptly “interventions.” Diplomacy? Nah, “hard” trumps (ha!) “soft” every time. And when you have mind-boggling technological death-dealing wizardry, with the implicit resort to thousands of nuclear weapons, bolstering that Nitze-ian creed, no heretics are permitted. “We coulda won it, if only you’d let us.” MacArthur wanted to A-bomb North Korea and China? Similar thoughts regarding North Viet Nam? “We bombed, burned, blockaded, and defoliated them, why not the next logical step?” Nixon adopting “mad man has control over nuclear weapons” as a negotiating strategy?

We are now past (a boasted) $1+ trillion per year in “defense” wastage. The Federal budget shrinks in what it funds, the national debt reaches further into the incomprehensible and unsustainable. It’s the MICIMATT-SH that’s betraying this country.
