With billionaires, I always look to see what is the real benefit to them of their supposed public interest activities, e.g., Gates pushing healthcare while making millions. Musk may have already gotten his real benefit by being given access to the Treasury's payment system where he can see what his competitors get in contracts.

A serious effort at spending cuts would have explained, for example, how USAID is more than bags of food for hungry children, but is essentially funding a network of NGOs that engage in CIA regime change and influence worldwide.

What they're doing now is just throwing red meat to their base. Going after DOD would mean having to cut into programs that threaten Musk and the other billionaires. And it likely would mean the Republicans would be accused of 'being soft on defense' - by the Democrats.

I rather doubt that Elon Musk would take on the MIC. He's probably way too close to it already. And how else would he "coup whomever we want" to secure his Lithium, etc.?
