Albert Einstein, 1949 ― “The result of these developments is an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society . . . since the members of legislative bodies are selected by political parties, largely financed or otherwise influenced by private capitalists who, for all practical purposes, separate the electorate from the legislature, . . .Why Socialism?, Monthly Review, Vol. 1, No. 1, May, 1949 and repeatedly republished in MR..

Step #1 would be to at least be able to challenge the conventional wisdom that the USA is a functioning democracy that is a beacon of hope to everyone around the world. Just raising the question of whether the USA is a democracy or a plutocracy/oligarchy would be considered heresy. Yes, the trappings of democracy exist, such as regular elections, but the system is rigged and totally corrupt. Big money controls all the levers of power. Hence, there is no real democracy at all, especially since the Citizens United decision put the final stake in whatever slim elements of democracy still existed. Nevertheless, the MSM and all politicians just drone on about how the fight against Russia and China is a fight between "democracy and authoritarianism." It's total nonsense. All the while, the plutocrats and oligarchs are laughing all the way to the bank.
