‘No Time to Go Wobbly’: Why Britain Is Lobbying U.S. Republicans on Ukraine
By Mark Landler
The U.K., often a wingman to the United States in defense, is pushing its ally to stand firm against President Vladimir V. Putin, amid fears that Russia poses an existential threat to Europe.

“Russia poses an existential threat to Europe.” So Russia, which has paid a heavy price to capture and defend territory in eastern Ukraine, is going to invade NATO countries next, threatening the existence of Europe, unless the United States keeps sending $5-$10 billion a month to Ukraine?
If Putin poses an existential threat to Europe, and Britain truly believes that Ukraine is the linchpin to Europe’s existence, I suggest Britain put together an expeditionary army and deploy it to Ukraine. Britain, after all, has a rich history of intervening militarily in continental affairs, whether against Napoleon, the Kaiser in World War I, or Hitler in World War II. Ramp up the BEF, the British Expeditionary Forces, and show Putin who’s boss!
Do we really need the British to tell our Congress that more war is the answer in Ukraine? That another $60 billion is what Ukraine needs to pin Putin down, thereby saving Europe? How long should America keep sending $60 billion or more in weaponry and aid per year to Ukraine so that Europe can continue to exist? Just in 2024? For another decade? Forever?
It’s truly rich that Britain is lobbying Republicans in Congress to support endless war. Perhaps Britain could pony up $60 billion in gold and send it to America, given the size of our national debt. As we used to say as kids: “Put your money where your mouth is.” Or, alternatively, put up or shut up.
This is just typical neocon threat inflation. Is any rational human being supposed to think that Russia poses an existential threat to Europe or the US? This “argument” can be broken down as follows; Russia, with an economy the size of Italy’s (less on a per capital basis) is going to reconstitute the Soviet Union, run the table to the English Channel., hurl itself across the Atlantic where Vladimir Putin will stand triumphant astride the Potomac. Frame it this way whenever you encounter such threat inflation, and watch the war pigs oink away, pig tails between their legs.
The UK ruling class is genetically disposed to Russophobia. And dreams of resurrecting its imperial past. Pathetic in the extreme.
