In the 80's I recall hearing on shortwave radio "Sky King Sky King this is Looking Glass. Do Not Answer Do Not Answer. Authentication X-ray Bravo" (or similar phonetics) and the word was this was a communication to the airborne command post.

I just read of Fed Chairman Powell saying the ever growing US debt is unsustainable. Unsaid but also true is the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere.

This puts me in mind of the prediction that the sun will swell in billions of years so that the inner planets will be destroyed, leaving earth a charred and barren rock. The way humanity is going with the US in the lead seems analogous to the fate of the sun. Millions of years since we departed on the tree of life from the chimps, let alone far longer since life appeared on Earth and it all ends up in a huge expansion of wealth and consumption in a couple of centuries. No blast doors will offer protection.

For all the bravado of those two soldiers posing in front of the blast door, an alien could be excused for thinking "this is silly"

Bill, great blog. Very interesting!

If I have my open-source research correct, the latest Russian radar designs can jam all AEWC-AWACS at long ranges. Able to actively jam all command data links over large areas. Effectively neutralizing the USAF's use of the E-4B’s and E-3 AWACS.

Have you kept up on this? It's tough nowadays to determine the true facts of the latest weaponry.

But I'm sure the technology changes by the week, and I wonder whether the E-4B and its crew of up to 112 stand ready, as STRATCOM puts it, still enables America’s leaders to “employ” its “global strike forces” anywhere in the World?

Wiki: In 2005, the Air Force awarded Boeing a five-year, US$2 billion contract (equivalent to $3-billion in 2022) for the continued upgrade of the E-4B fleet.[7] In addition to the purchase and upgrade costs, the E-4 costs nearly $160,000 per hour (equivalent to $195,097 in 2022) for the Air Force to operate.[8] The E-4B fleet had an estimated unit cost of approximately US$223.2 million each in 2024.[1]

In 2021 and 2022, the U.S. Air Force began developing a replacement for the E-4. The new platform is currently known as the Survivable Airborne Operations Center.[32][33]

Since the FY2021 NDAA, Congress has appropriated nearly $300 million in development funds, including $76.4 million for the first contracts in 2021.[7] The Air Force requested substantially greater funding in FY2024, asking for $888.8 million.[8] As of the FY2024 funding request, the program is expected to cost $8.3-billion over the period from FY2022 through FY2028.[9]

Pretty soon we will be talking real money eh Lt. Col!
