Indeed, it is shameful. All the Ra! Ra! military speak is proven to be exactly what I thought it was: theater. Brian McGinniss is a hero. Senator Sheehy and the police are scum (Am I allowed to use 4-letter words in this space, Bill? If not, please replace "scum" with "motherfuckers".)

Bill Astore's avatar

Both are acceptable--and accurate.

With each passing day, the scene in the so-called Middle East more and more approaches the scenario "prophesied" for Armageddon, the Apocalypse, Judgment Day, the Second Coming, call it what you prefer. It is difficult to find things to laugh at, but I vow to have the heartiest of laughs when these idiot "Christians" FAIL to find themselves "raptured" straight to Jesus's side at his throne in Heaven. In the movie "Eye of the Needle," the late Donald Sutherland plays a Nazi spy working on English soil during WW II. He recoils in disgust when a colleague just arrived from Berlin informs him that (regarding outcome of the war) "Hitler's astrologer says..." We should all recoil in disgust that this conflagration underway was partially launched to please idiot religious fanatics, and "justified" because an insane POTUS had "a feeling" that Iran was on the brink of attacking the Zionist state and US assets in the region. US assets, just a few of the 800 or so US military footprints around the globe. As a distraction from the Epstein affair, sure, that's a side benefit to Trump but relatively minor. He knows he will never see the inside of a jail cell regardless of what concrete information may surface, on this or any other situation.

Revised post I started posting on X, here and other sites last Saturday.

Spiritually, this is the WHY this WAR is Happening even if Trump, his Religious supporters and US & Canadian MSN War Propagandists don't know it or see it.

NOW HEAR, O HEAVENS, AND GIVE EAR, O EARTH, FOR THE LORD HAS SPOKEN,

Children I have raised and exalted, yet they have rebelled against Me.

An ox knows his owner and a donkey his master's crib; Israel does not know, my people does not consider.

Woe to a sinful nation, a people heavy with iniquity, evildoing seed, corrupt children.

They forsook the Lord; they provoked the Holy One of Israel; they drew backwards.

Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 1:2-3-4

The rest is posted downstream

I've heard that some of the idiots awaiting "the Rapture" believe that when they ascend to Heaven they'll be buck naked, their earthly garments left where they had sat, stood or reclined at the Great Moment!! I find that pretty droll. It should be understood by any sensible person--but I reckon we are a vanishing species--that The Book of Revelation contains THE most insane babbling in the whole bloody Bible. Whoever penned that stuff was drunk out of his/their mind(s), or maybe high on some kind of mushroom. Man, Mark Twain would have a field day writing about the events we are currently being forced to live thru!

Armageddon outa here Greg speaking of Movies "Eye of the Needle" a great one "The Rapture" with Tom Cruises first wife Mimi Rogers I saw it at the Firehouse back when it came out in 1991. A Box Office disappointment tho. Mimi is great in it! Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars for avoiding the "Pious Banalities" of most religious movies. The "Rapture" to me is a piece of apocalyptic B.S. to the point of imbecility...! In regards to the "Friendly Fire in the Senate" I also share the disgust for what happened.

Gregory Laxer's avatar

I steered clear of "The Rapture." I wouldn't patronize something like that even to seek to laugh at it. (Hey, does this mean I'm not openminded?!?) I did not always agree with either Siskel or Ebert back in the day when they were both healthy enuf to do the show. Any area of cultural activity is wide open to different interpretations and opinions, that's for sure.

X K's avatar

I stumbled upon “The Rapture” on t.v. (more likely cable, given its content), saw that Mimi Rogers was in it, whom I had liked in another mother, thought I’d watch it. Ho-lee! I’m not sure if I even watched the entire thing, but to this day have two impressions: 1) a wacky story, and 2) Mimi Rogers’ incredible breasts, proudly on display. Also a question, why in hell did she do it? By the way, via Imdb.com I can confirm that Siskel & Ebert gave it a full four stars, though I can’t fathom way. Overall rating on Imbd was a more sober and mediocre 6.3.

Fireman1110's avatar

Mimi was in her prime back then still a good looking Head. And.., yes they are spectacular. I don't know XK I just think it was some of her best work, or her best depending on who you talk to. The whole "Rapture" is a wacky story getting spirited up all bollicky buck naked as Greg says to the clouds and then meeting up w/ God in his heavenly airplane!! Ludicrous.

X K's avatar

"I don't know XK I just think it was some of her best work, or her best depending on who you talk to."

More inexplicable or anomalous to me, but I'll leave it up to you. I just checked, the local library system has the DVD, I wonder if the librarian looks somewhat askance at the patron while checking it out...

Ray Joseph Cormier's avatar

According to Scripture, Jesus in his other Lord's prayer, prays there shouldn't be any such thing as a "Rapture."

I pray not that you should take them out of the world, but that you should keep them from the evil.

They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

John 17:15-16

When John Lennon said The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ, it was probably True. The Christians burned Beatles albums like Nazis burned books in 1933.

If the Christians were doing what they should be doing then, most probably this World would not be in such dire straits these days.

If the security guards were being overpowered by say a group of violent intruders, the Senator (ex Navy SEAL) involving himself could perhaps be justified - on grounds of self defense.

But that is not the case here. There is a presumption of the right to impose control and silence dissent, when the SOB should have been asking why another generation of young Americans are being sent into combat - this time for another nation.

I said I held him in contempt yesterday - today I add disgust.

Hello TomR... That ex-Navy Seal, Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana, has been bought by APAC, to the tune of over $500,000... He broke Brian McGinniss' Arm... IMHO, that was an excessive use of Force... There are ways to force Compliance without serious Injury...

When the American establishment supports this illegal attack on Iran, violating the very same International Law they DEMONIZE Russia for violating, this World is on the Road to Destruction.

Not my problem if it's ignored. They ignored Christ Jesus.

The WHY this WAR is Happening

Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 1:2-3-4

The US-Israeli provoked WAR is bringing this World closer to Armageddon, the Battle of the great day of God Almighty between Theocratic Israel vs Theocratic Iran and US Christian Nationalism mixed in, in this time of the Revelation of Jesus Christ described in 16:13-16.

And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

For they are the spirits of DEVILS, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth ($Billionaires, Presidents, Prime Ministers, CEOs and other IDOLS of the People) and of the whole world, (the rest of the passive powerless People) to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

Behold, I come as a thief. (when you least expect it)

Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

It will be interesting to see what impact Sergeant McGinnis’s action on Capitol Hill will have on his campaign as the Green Party candidate for US Senate from North Carolina in the election in November. [Which assumes, of course, that there will indeed BE an election in November; in North Carolina or anyplace else.]

Glen Brown's avatar

Shame on the Congress, Shame on the Generals, Shame on the Warmongers And Mostly Shame on the corporate Democratic and Republican economic policies that ensured young American would be poor enough insecure enough to JOIN the American military- a sickly organization that started wars killed millions since 1945. Millions of people around the world who merely did not want American corporatism. Like Iran today or Iranian democratic socialism that Eisenhower fucked up in 1953.

It's the incompleteness of your sentences, the incompleteness of your thoughts Billy, your lack of following your thoughts through that has you coming up short of saying anything really bracing or poignant.

You are on the right track but....stop writing long enough to finish your thoughts. This could be said of most substackers, most social media twits tweeters....At least Bill is on the right track! There is hope for him. "Keep Hope Alive" I

loved Jesse Jackson almost as much as Ralph Nader, MLK.

Bill Astore's avatar

You complete me, Glen.

Glen Brown's avatar

Bill, Larry Wilkerson and Larry C Johnson and to a lessor extent Mearsheimer are almost certain that Iran will be able to destroy Israel...that Iran has not used their best weapons yet....They seem too certain of this for me.

It's seems like wishful thinking.

Nader echoed me on this. It is hard to imagine what they imagine to happen relatively soon. Who knows but karma....

Bill Astore's avatar

The short answer: I don't know. I fear a massive Iranian response (assuming they are capable of one) would trigger a nuclear response from Israel. And then, who knows what?

This dangerous war must end now.

Glen Brown's avatar

Agreed-if and only if Iran can stop Isreal's ongoing genocide-it's greater Israel project its advancing as I type. I fear the ongoing genocide more than worry about nuclear escalation-a species that tolerates GENOCIDE is not worth saving. Israel is taking advantage of the war in Iran to increase it's genocidal killings of it's Arab neighbors.

Bill Astore's avatar

Perhaps we humans are a lost cause, but not everyone is tolerating genocide. Nor should we take the planet and all living things with us in said nuclear holocaust.

Glen Brown's avatar

Bill, Read George Hazim Iran ascends, failed empires reach for Armageddon

Cornered by failure, Trump and Netanyahu are reportedly weighing a nuclear strike on Iran’s Fordow facility – a reckless step toward catastrophe. Mar 8

I posted: China and Russia should warn America if it goes nuclear, they will respond in kind. In an age of might makes right nuclear deterrence is now our best hope until America/Israel.... the world de-nuclearizes. As Mearsheimer points out if Iran had nuclear weapons Israel and America would not be bombing the hell out of it.

Glen Brown's avatar

American Airforce bombers- American fly boys have not been men of decency since 1945. The war is illegal-immoral and just following orders was no excuse at Nurenberg. It is no excuse for every American flyboy dropping bombs on Iran now.

Glen Brown's avatar

America needs to replace its statue of liberty with an American soldier pissing on a dead Afghan or Iraqi-dead Vietnamese-Korean-Libyan-Iranian-Somalian... list all 80 nationalities. Other Statues could be American pilots dropping napalm-agent orange on civilians-let’s celebrate the greater glory of the nation that put “the bombs bursting” in its theme song-national anthem that made Americans and the world so unfree to corporatism/militarism-corporate militarism.

Glen Brown's avatar

Fear of a nuclear holocaust should not prevent us from shutting down Israel's genocide.

Glen Brown's avatar

Even Aljazeera fails to make clear in its reporting on the war on Iran that Iran is attacking America when it attacks it' vessel states Arabic nations in the Gulf Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates Bahrain....These vassal GULF states talk about their sovereignty when they have American military bases on their soil when they are but whores to America. Corporatism/militarism...they sold out their dignity sovereignty that Iran has not. So much of the reporting escapes this foremost fundamental fact. To be an enemy of the United States is to resist being fucked by American corporatism. Minding your own business or businesses being sovereign is to be an enemy of America and the cause of every American war since 1945 .

jg moebus's avatar

And as Jazzme noted earlier, SHAME on The American Peoples: Especially those who approve of what happened to Sergeant McGinnis; along with those who approve of The War on Iran.

Watching Your accompanying video and a number of other related videos online, Bill, i have one question.

But first: Please understand that this is not in any way a criticism of the Sergeant or what he did. Rather, it raises an issue that could prove relevant should he file charges for Assault and Battery against ~ and seeks compensatory damages from ~ Senator Sheehy. i seriously doubt that the Duties and Responsibilities of US Senators include maintaining law and order up on The Hill.

My question is as follows: Is interrupting and disrupting a Congressional Hearing an exercise of “Freedom of Speech”?

For that matter, is interrupting and disrupting Any meeting of Any organization or institution ~ government, business, church, school, family, social gathering, whatever ~ an exercise in “Freedom of Speech”? Under any circumstances except, probably, to declare warnings of immediate threat of harm?

In other words: Does the Right to “Freedom of Speech” include the Right to barge into the middle of a structured gathering of people and interject Your opinion? Especially regarding who and what You happen to disagree with? Is that included in the concept of “Free Speech”?

If that is the case, then is there a Right to “Freedom FROM Speech”? Ie, of NOT having to put up with and listen to somebody who was not invited to participate in the meeting? Sort of like the Rights to Freedom OF and Freedom FROM Religion.

In any event, America’s Reality-TV Soap Opera Extravaganza ~ POTUS Maxximmuss XLVII and The End of The American Empire and Experiment ~ marches on.

Bill Astore's avatar

I'd call it an act of civil disobedience with freedom of speech as its justification. As always happens, the Capitol police were there to remove him from the room. They are trained to do this. The burly senator jumping in led to his arm being broken.

As the Army says, stay in your lane. I guess the senator, who apparently works for Israel, decided he'd also be a cop for the day. He was way out of his lane.

jg moebus's avatar

At this point, Bill, i’d call it an act of civil disobedience with the Pretext of freedom of speech as its justification. i go back to my original question: Is interrupting and disrupting a Congressional hearing an exercise of “Freedom of Speech”?

And my question now is: What exactly was Sergeant McGinnis attempting to accomplish? What GOOD did he think would come out of his action? And, at this stage, does he feel, believe, and think that any good Has come out of it?

One thing is certain: If SGT McGinniss’s action inspires enough others to attempt to disrupt and interrupt Congressional hearings, Congress will simply close them all to the Public.

And one more thing is certain: There will be physical contact and conflict on the streets of America between those who are against this War and those who are in favor of it.

Meanwhile, The Real Question remains: What can Americans who ARE against this War do ~ actually really Do ~ to end it?

Anything?

And as regard Senator Sheehy and his “lane”: It will be interesting to see if Mr McGinnis will be allowed to sue Sheehy for damages.

Bill Astore's avatar

It's revealing, Jeff, that public hearings in Congress don't allow for public comments, even for five minutes.

I'm with SGT McGinnis and civil disobedience here. Freedom of speech means nothing when you're not allowed to speak, when all you can do is sit quietly and listen to official lies. Sometimes, one must take a stand; one must act to be heard.

jg moebus's avatar

i don’t know how revealing it is, Bill; but it is very understandable.

How exactly would public comments at Congressional hearings be handled?

First of all, how many people would actually be able to make public comments, even for, as You say, five minutes? A handful? A dozen? A hundred?

Second and more importantly: Exactly WHO would get to decide who got to make those comments? And HOW would they determine who does and does not get to speak?

There are plenty of ways for Citizens to speak their minds to Congress and for their message to get public exposure. Again, i’m not sure exactly what SGT McGinnis’s action has to do with “Freedom of Speech.”

And if, as You say, “one must act to be heard,” how many people in a position to do something about that War heard what he had to say? Let alone listened to it? Any?

Having said all that, here’s one way Sergeant Mac’s message might have been much better heard and listened to:

Write an Open Letter personally addressed to each Senator and Representative and hand-deliver it ~ in uniform ~ to each addressee’s office on Capitol Hill. Before delivering it, read it publicly and send copies of the Letter to all Media, MSM and Otherwise.

Bill Astore's avatar

No, I disagree, Jeff, because the real message was in what happened after he spoke. The reaction he provoked. As soon as he said that no American service member wants to die for Israel, he was violently assaulted by a U.S. senator, who broke his arm.

That violent reaction to the mere words of this Marine tells you who owns that U.S. senator, and who indeed owns much of the Congress.

You can't send that "message" in an "open letter."

jg moebus's avatar

i’m not sure what You’re disagreeing about, Bill. The question was whether this incident was a Freedom of Speech event or something else, and whether public comments at Congressional hearings are doable.

And what was the real message of what happened after he was interrupted by the Capitol Police from interrupting the meeting?

Before he was assaulted by a US Senator, he was apprehended and being escorted ~ while physically resisting and continuing to yell his message ~ from the Hearing room by the Capitol Police. Do You think that the Capitol Police were correct in attempting to remove him from the Hearing room?

In a statement after the incident, the Capitol Police said: "Protests are not allowed inside the Congressional Buildings. There are plenty of other spots on Capitol Grounds, outside, where demonstrations are allowed."

And Senator Sheehy's reaction to McGinnis's words about dying for Israel tells me less about who "owns" Sheehy than about how

seriously unhinged this ex-Navy SEAL was, at least at that moment.

According to ABC News, the Senator defended his actions in a post on X Wednesday afternoon, in which he also shared video of the incident:

"Capitol Police were attempting to remove an unhinged protestor from the Armed Services hearing. He was fighting back. I decided to help out and deescalate the situation," Sheehy said in his post.

"This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation, and he got one. I hope he gets the help he needs without causing further violence," Sheehy added.

And if nothing else, an Open Letter delivered to every Senator and Representative would have avoided the confrontation and conflict, and might actually have been read, reflected upon, reckoned with, and reacted and responded to.

Aunty Jean's avatar

According to the Senate website most committee meetings and markup sessions are generally open to the public. A list of meetings is here: www.senate.gov/committees/hearings_meetings.htm

jg moebus's avatar

Those meetings and sessions that are open to the Public, Aunty Jean, are NOT open to interruptions and disruptions by that Public of the proceedings. As Bill, said: That’s what the Capitol Police are for.

“Freedom of Speech” does not work that way. Anywhere.

As i asked in my earlier comment: Is interrupting and disrupting a Congressional Hearing an exercise of “Freedom of Speech”?

For that matter, is interrupting and disrupting any meeting of any organization or institution ~ government, business, church, school, family, social gathering, whatever ~ an exercise in “Freedom of Speech”? Under any circumstances except, probably, to declare warnings of immediate threat of harm?

In other words: Does the Right to “Freedom of Speech” include the Right to barge into the middle of a structured gathering of people and interject Your opinion? Especially regarding who and what You happen to disagree with? Is that included in the concept of “Free Speech”?

Aunty Jean's avatar

Thanks for clarifying; I now see the full point that you are making. I agree with Bill's comment above "freedom of speech means nothing when you're not allowed to speak." In the name of "procedure" and "law and order" the government can easily silence any critics. And while I abhor violence (you fear physical altercations in the streets), violence comes about when people know that their voices are not being heard: MLK, Jr. "Riots are the voices of the unheard."

jg moebus's avatar

Like i said, Aunty Jean: “Freedom of Speech” has nothing to do with interrupting and disrupting a structured meeting, be it in Congress or anyplace else. See the comment i posted earlier to Bill on public comments at open Congressional meetings.

Also, the government can easily ~ and rightfully ~ silence critics when they are speaking without invitation or permission in a government meeting.

And my fear of physical altercations in the streets is based on two things:

1. That it will lead to the killing, maiming, and wounding of Human Beings on both sides, and the damaging and/or destruction of private and public property.

2. And when that happens in sufficiently widespread intensity [which will be easy to make happen], the stage will be set for declaring a “National Emergency,” invoking The Insurrection Act of 1807, declaring Martial Law, and launching that fully functional and operational Dictatorship i’ve spoken of before.

And speaking of Martin Luther King, Jr: What do You think his reaction and response would have been to the Riots that followed his assassination?

Aunty Jean's avatar

I understand your concerns, yet I believe that Trump will declare a National Emergency whenever it strikes his fancy. He doesn't care about the law, he goes right ahead and acts like a dictator already. An obedient public just makes it look a little smoother.

jg moebus's avatar

Trump is indeed acting very much like a Dictator now, Aunty Jean. And the American Peoples are letting him get away with it.

And part of the reason for that is that there are a lot of Americans ~ on the Right but also on the Left ~ who would very probably welcome a Dictatorship, as long as it was her or his guy or gal who was the Dictator,

In any event, Trump will not decide when to announce the National Emergency. That will be decided by his owners, operators, commanders, controllers, scripters, and choreographers: America’s Ruling Political Class/Caste and its Deep State. The same people, groups, organizations, and institutions that owned, operated...choreographed every one of his predecessors in Your and my lifetime back to Truman. And further. Much further,

All Trump is is a Reality-TV Soap Opera Extravaganza Host. And he is doing a Great job of it. If he wasn’t, he would be replaced.
