I read that Trump is proposing rebuilding the Navy to 380 combatant ships over the next 30 years, requiring $40 billion per year. Given the way military procurement works, it can be assumed any ships built will be obsolete as they slide down slipways. That can already be seen with today's US combatant ships, as the carrier USS Truman lost an F18 over the side as it maneuvered to avoid a Houthi missile - from one of the poorest countries on Earth.
But none of that matters, as $40 billion per year means a lot of money to various industries with a nice return on investment to Congress as lobbyist money (from the same industries) pours back to them.
Of course, at some point the debt death spiral will commence and all this spending will cease. But until then it will be party on.
And with all the hubris of this country's ongoing, proposed, and (for neocons and Zionists), hoped-for, wars, I wonder who will be the future Thucydides writing about the equivalent of the invasion of Sicily.
I'm guessing there's a Navy chief on the Truman who first made sure the unfortunate crewmen moving the F18 were not seriously injured, then promptly chewed them out. :-)
Fun fact: There are more planes in the sea than submarines in the sky. To answer this query (if anyones interested) several hundred to low thousands mostly from WW2...!
The best my boat (SSN) could do was almost coming out of the water on an emergency blow test - a fraction of a second of weightlessness, which was very cool. But that's about it.
100% spot on, Bill. This has never been so obvious as now. So much to support this conclusion. Like how our Western military equipment is inferior to Russian and its allies' equipment. The Houthis recently shot a missile at a US aircraft carrier and an F-18 fell off it. I mean come on. Makes me frustrated that some Americans still support war.
We are at the height of ridiculousness. American politicians and high ranking military say we're going to war with China, but they don't say that it's pointless and we will lose within days. I think the majority of US politicians believe mainstream media, and both D and R media heavily promote war. I mean money laundering. It's ALL money laundering.
Except maybe Israel. They really seem to want to kill everyone around them.
The prime example of that in recent history, is the 20 year, $2 TRILLION cost to US Taxpayers, the US WAR having the most EXPENSIVE MILITARY FORCE in the History of Mankind, waged on one of the poorest Countries on Earth, hurriedly making an exit like they did in Vietnam so many years earlier.
I see things like that as the Invisible God actively bringing Justice and Judgment to this Material World on the Path to self-destruction!
Revelation of Jesus Christ: Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.
Because you have kept the word of my patience, I also will keep you from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon ALL THE WORLD, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
"A man who loves wisdom makes his father rejoice, but the one who keeps company with prostitutes squanders his wealth. By justice a king brings stability to a land, but a man seeking bribes brings it to ruin." [Proverbs 29:3,4]
It's hard for any Individual to go against "The System" without seeing it as a job to want to do no matter how hard it seems at any time, internalizing the Patience of Job and The Saints, in this Impatient World that is never satisfied.
This has actually been going on since WWII. As Howard Zinn noted in A People's history of the US, WWII boosted corporate profits dramatically, isolated the anti-war left and opened the way for a permanent war economy. In fact, then president of General Motors, Charles E. Wilson, stated outright at the time that things were going so well for corporate American that he suggested setting up a "permanent war economy". They did, and we have one still to this day.
Yes... no doubt what we have today is not by way of accident; but cold hard calculus of cold-hearted men and women who manipulated a vulnerable system for their own ends and ideologies.
Christ Jesus the Jew was crucified because he overturned the tables of the Bankers and Merchants working the Shopping Mall on Temple property, saying to the Jewish Religious Establishment, 'The House of MY Father, is a House of Prayer for ALL Nations, and you have made it a Den of Thieves!'
All these Centuries later, Christmas and Easter are BIG MONEY makers for Today's Bankers and Merchants, when the God made Human, Male and Female, is the only possible Temple of God according to Biblical teaching.
Off course my fellow traveller you are on target. I concur entirely: "And God went on to create the man in his image, in God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. Male and female he created them. On the day they were created, he blessed them and named them Man." [Genesis1:1-50:26]
Unfortunately, in the 6000 year Bible History, (in another place it says 1000 years to God is the same as a Human Day, so is it 6000 years Materially or 6 Days Spiritually, for this Earth to be where it's at?)
In any case, it appears this Material World hasn't changed much from this description, the 2nd line in the Genesis-Creation story, 'And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.'
Yes, I agree Ray. I think we have been misled by our science - they think they have the answers, but continually confuse. I am certain our destiny is eternal, as it is written. Jesus came to tell us this important fact but how difficult is it to explain such an etherial concept?
No wonder few believed with faith alone, even though He gave many examples and miracles and tried so hard to have humans understand. And even returned after His death, yet even then, few believed. He said that within two generations His message would be corrupted (by the church) and so it was.
It's not always easy to see the obvious! You can be overeducated as well, as I was. Too much Clausewitz, Jomini, Thucydides, and other military thinkers. Economic motives are often left out of "traditional" military theory classes. We're taught how to fight and win wars, tactically and strategically, but often not what wars are really being fought for, and who profits the most from them.
"They lie to us about all of the wars!” They’re lying to us about the need for war with Russia and China. They’re lying to us about the need for more armaments and newer, more powerful nuclear weapons. The lies are bankrupting us financially, spiritually, socially and politically. Yes, Bill, follow the money . . .
It's not Money but the LOVE OF MONEY that's the ROOT OF ALL EVIL on Earth!
With Trump, ever more People are beginning to see the Writing's on the Wall.
In Biblical History, ancient Babylon now called Iraq, was the 1st Economic-Military Super Power dictating the Rules based Order to the other Countries of the Middle East some 2600 years ago.
At the peak of the Pride of Power, the king of Babylon put on a State Dinner inviting 1000 of the rich elites of his kingdom and they praised what the Bible calls the "gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood and stone."
From THEN to NOW, IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID! as the current saying goes.
It was at that point, the Writing on the Wall appears saying Super Power Babylon would be superseded by ancient Persia, now called Iran.
Did that ancient Biblical History repeat itself when the US invaded Iraq in 2003, this Material World's latest, greatest Economic-Military Super Power, VIOLATING of the VERY SAME International Law Russia is demonized for, to contain Iran on Israel's behalf even as the World can see the Israeli Genocide in Gaza.
The MSM is reporting Israel wants to attack Iran NOW but needs Trump's permission and backing to do it.
Use your own imagination to see many possible consequences for the World and us over here, if that happens over there???
As a historian (as you are), I'm wary of "always." So, I don't think money has always been the primary motive for war. In a rare exception that tests the rule, World War II was not solely about money, as both Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were looking for world power achieved in the nastiest of ways. I'd argue the U.S., though obviously not an innocent, was considerably less nasty than the alternative.
But that was 1941-45; as they say, that was then, this is now, and America hasn't faced a direct threat to its national security since those empires. (The Cold War is another story saved for another day.)
Recall that the Third Reich was to reign for 1000 years--and that most certainly wouldn't have been something anyone in America would have cherished. (Except for a few Nazis, I suppose.)

The more warplanes that slip over the sides to sink into the deep, the more we have to build. Win-win!
As you say Bill - follow the money. The Warfare/Welfare state is a fixed icon.https://austrianpeter.substack.com/p/economic-warfare-101-imf-clueless?s=w

Yes, Karl. There were no innocents. But some were more guilty (or more evil) than others.
