Obama was one of the most talented con men in a series of presidential grifters. His 'hope and change' messaging was pure campaign rhetoric that brought in the suckers; when even a Sarah Palin can mock it ("how's that hopey changey thing working out for ya?"), you know the political establishment knew the game and smiled. Good riddance.
Frank Herbert's "Dune" had a theme that becomes clearer every election - power is magnetic to pathological individuals drawn to corruption. Career politicians are essentially career criminals - while career criminals can wind up in penitentiaries, politicians get re-elected.
I never felt like such a "stupid" "sucker" (as some here have accused Trump voters of being) as I was when I campaigned, sent money and voted for Obama. After Viet Nam, the biggest wake-up call of my life. His campaign never even cashed my last meager check. Didn't know at the time he was backed by Wall Street. How could I have been so "stupid"?
I understand, as I voted for him in 2008 (last time I voted for a Democrat).
We should have all known what was coming - in the pre inauguration phase when he was leading the meetings with the Wall Street big shots to discuss the 'recovery' from the financial collapse; this while the Bush team was still in office.
Ya. He took good care of those that caused the financial collapse, just not the victims thereof, even though he pretended he would. (If you hear anger, you are correct).
I was a skeptic right up to the last few weeks of his 2008 campaign, but finally got on board in support of his single-payer promise. Then, shortly after the election, when he named Hillary as SoS, I knew the fix was in, and we'd been scammed. His cozying up to Summers and Geithner was the final nail.
But we have never been "blessed" with a POTUS so brazenly OPENLY engaging in criminal activity as our current treasure in the Oval Office. My old Army buddy in Ohio has it right when he simply refers to the Trump Crime Family. In the Mafia sense, this "family" isn't exclusively made up of blood relatives of the Godfather at the helm. Though in the current case, a certain son-in-law is up to his elbows in dirt, and he has a brother who's part of the consortium buying the LA Lakers.
"If you look at the history of Obama, with the crimes he's committed, in office, publicly, and gotten by with that, you understand two things: First of all, that he's a criminal, really, by any standard of decency, and he's a great liar."
Trump is a symptom, not the disease. The disease is the corruption of both political parties. It's called the ratchet effect in politics: the democrat party stops any movement to the Left, the republican party moves the overton window over to the right. This has been taking place now for decades in the US. Trump is the latest result. But it's going to continue as long as big money controls US politicians.
The fatal flaw of capitalism is that its logical end point is the unrestrained accumulation of all wealth by a very few at the expense of everything (e.g., natural resources - and now the climate) and everyone else.
The whole society is ruled by corruption tied to greed. Fracking companies pump chemical mixtures into the ground that are proprietary and as result no state agency knows what's going in. The food industry uses over 95% of ingredients that have no known safety studies or oversight by the FDA. AI datacenters; overpriced and poor quality cars; the list is endless.
What follows the end point appears to be either anarchy or a crushing police state.
And the fatal flaw of Democracy is an electorate that is too preoccupied or too lazy to vet their politicians before they vote and are too easily swayed by advertising and the promises of con artists who are only concerned about their own self interests.
Personally, I don't blame the economic slaves known as ordinary working Americans - as much as the Plantation Owner obscenely rich - who have the power and indecency to lie to the American people 24/7 - and possess as their one and only virtue - greed. Which actually is not a virtue. Many of these obscenely rich oligarchs are criminals - and want nothing more than a lawless/deregulated society - with rules only made by them and their money.
Sorry, I can't buy that. It is the responsibility of the people to vet and select those who represent them. If they choose fools then they will be led by fools.
Secondly, while the first amendment guarantees the right to free speech, and the SCOTUS has declared that corporations have the same right and that there can't be any restrictions on spending for political campaigns, THERE IS NO LAW that says you have to listen to their bullshit or that you can't think for yourself.
Finally, a people who are incapable of managing a democracy do not deserve one.
So easy isn't it to blame the working bloke - but not the people in charge? Funny how that works. Particularly when they don't give you a real choice in an election. But hell - it's still your fault. The abuser always blames the victim. Same old story.
By the way, in case you didn't notice, we no longer live in a "Representative" democracy. We live in a corporatocracy run by oligarchs. Very little of what the American people want or ask for gets into law - and the candidates they get to choose from are a bunch of bought tools for the rich.
And Unions have become completely eviscerated by the Right and their billionaire masters - over the last number of decades.
But go ahead, blame the guy working three jobs trying to raise a family - it's all his fault. Can't be the people in charge - or those running the two corrupt parties. It can't be their fault!
Not much thinking involved when it's a choice between tweedle dee - the Democratic party, and tweedle dum - the Republican party. Of course you can always put in Mickey Mouse as your candidate - but good luck with that.
Well said, and I share your opinion. Not to mention the degradation of the US educational system into yet another corporatocracy of greed; and the stunning degradation of the US military given the way overpriced weapons requiring absurd amounts of maintenance that are barely field ready or capable. Weapons and assets already fossilized by modern drones and new military missile doctrines. And now the US military can't even feed its own adequately (something you didn't see very often in World War II or even Vietnam).
Hard to prognosticate what the future will bring. Seems like the short term future will be more economic pain for most ordinary Americans. The super rich are already insulated and have been investing in safe havens abroad along with million dollar bunkers.
Will Americans meekly submit to a police state? We're already seeing some outlaw behavior with the Flock camera fiasco - which is going awry. ICE is meeting with increasing resistance along with the abomination of these mammoth resource sucking data centers - which the owners want to make the locals pay for with increased utility bills.
Don't know. But it ain't going to be a good road to be on for some time to come.
Carl Sagan passed away in 1996 30 yrs. ago now. He was only 62, tragic. Before he left us he was Interviewed and gave a dire warning about how susceptible America would be to the next "Charlatan" politician who would come along. Sagan said the complete lack of skeptical, scientific thinking could lead to a ton of disastrous consequences down the road. As a man who dedicated his life to science & education he knew exactly how bad things could and would get!!! Today we now see the problems happening-- anti. science, climate change deniers, anti.- vaxxers, conspiracy theories, Carl Sagan was right what a Visionary...! "Saganist"
Imagine how Dr. Sagan would have reacted to the news that 1.) the GOP is doing its best to sabotage real science at NASA (anything related to "defense" is OK of course); and 2.) in the most backward regions of the country, Bible study--BIBLE STUDY!!--is being introduced as a mandatory subject in public schools. Sometimes in the guise of studying literature. And these backward regions are no longer confined to "the Bible Belt" where the likes of William Jennings Bryan plied his wares. :-(
As others note here, the system (capitalist control) needs to be replaced, not reformed. Not saying that capitalist elements can’t be a part of the replacement, just not the dominant paradigm. Leftists need to support candidates willing to push the replacement, rather than the reform. Those candidates can be socialists, independents, third-party, and Democrats willing to push the envelope, rather than settle for pragmatic crumbs when monied interest pressure is brought to bear.
Can’t recommend highly enough Clare Mattei’s recent book, ‘The Capital Order’, in which she articulates the means by which capitalism compels economists (charlatan alert!) to buy in to capitalism’s there is no alternative to austerity and capital strike threat, in order to keep the general public locked into culture war and docility with debt slavery.
This Angie Nixon in Florida, who upset a mainstream Dem. in primary despite being outspent 20 to one, says she recently joined the DREADED Democratic Socialists of America!! Because the DNC has no solutions to offer for the working poor. Well, I can't argue with that assertion, but man is the GOP gonna slam her for this every day until November's elections!
Nixon seems, to me, to be one who will relish the GOP slams, unlike the usual milk toast Dems, and slam back harder, as opposed to offering up wonky policy rebuttal.
Can’t reform it. Electoral politics is a farce. We need 10 million people in the streets to bring about anything better. Otherwise, we’re headed down a dark, poverty stricken, surveillance riddled, ecocided fascist path indeed.
"If you look at the history of Obama, with the crimes he's committed, in office, publicly, and gotten by with that, you understand two things: First of all, that he's a criminal, really, by any standard of decency, and he's a great liar."
Unfortunately the Supreme Court has ruled that the government can lie to the people all they want, with no consequences to them. A citizen, however, cannot lie to the government without risking going to jail/prison. Note of course that the Supreme Court is part of the government so their ruling in this instance is no surprise.
Related to the theme of betrayal, when you look at it through the lens of Obama being a Constitutional Scholar and knowingly codifying indefinite detention without trial, the language about a "soul" reflects the absolute gravity of the principle that was compromised.
I mention "Soul" because I already have the X addressed to Obama ready to send, BUT I'm asking all the aware regulars contributing to Bill's site, do you think this too harsh? Reading the Email from 8 years ago to the US Today, it was prescient.
"Barack, I sent this email to you 8 years ago. It was prescient, looking at the US Today. You have not redeemed yourself for signing the 2012 NDAA into Law instead of a VETO even in the face of overwhelming VETO proof majorities in both The House & The Senate. At least you would have saved your Soul."
What do you think?
Email to President Obama September 10, 2018.
Dear President Obama.
As a Canadian, I was very happy when you were elected President. I saw that as a hopeful Sign for America and the World.
You didn't campaign to inherit the Global Financial Meltdown-Economic Pearl Harbour that happened even before you were elected, in the last months of 8 years of Republicanomics of more to the rich, and fighting Foreign Wars on Credit.
The Trump Republican Tax Bill they spin as 'Reform' is the continuation of those Bush Policies on steroids.
Watching from CanaDa, the real danger I see, is if there is another Global Financial Collapse due to more US Economic War on more perceived enemies simultaneously than ever before in US history, complemented by more tariffs on US Allies than ever before Americans will have to pay for.
Removing the few Regulations put in place after the 2008 Global Financial Meltdown-Economic Pearl Harbour to prevent a re-recurrence, the worst possible aspects I would expect you were briefed on at the Time, increases the likelihood what has already happened, could happen again?
Watching these things, I have to wonder if there is a method to Trump's madness?
If there is a sudden, unexpected Global Financial Meltdown-Economic Pearl Harbour like the last one, in the face of the Social Chaos you were warned in 2008 would happen unless you signed onto TARP, it is President Trump who could invoke the use of the worst provisions in the 2012 NDAA you signed into Law.
That would make Trump, with 2 years to go, the 1st to use the Legal Authority in that 2012 NDAA, to have his Bureaucracy/Military get rid of his 'opposition' in some Gitmo/Gulag, by accusing them of being vaguely associated with terrorism as determined by the Trump bureaucracy, in a Time of Social disorder. The right to challenge the government's 'suspicion' in a Court of Law is removed. That's a very real possibility with Trump's temperament he has already displayed.
I always admired the High Ideals in your speeches, hoping and praying Americans would take them to heart. But I also saw you didn't always practice what you preached. On that score, the whole human Race without exception, is guilty.
I appreciated your Grace in dealing with a Congress whose Republican Leaders Declared, even before you were sworn in, their sole goal was to destroy your Presidency, and I saw they did everything within their power to do that.
I hate seeing the Republican hypocrisy/duplicity now that the Pendulum has swung to the other side.
My deepest personal disappointment in you is, as a Constitutional Scholar, you did not VETO the 2012 NDAA even in the face of the overwhelming VETO-proof majorities in both Houses of Congress.
At least, you would have started the Real Debate on American Democracy.
Now that you have entered the Current Political debate, you can still redeem yourself, admitting you made a mistake signing the 2012 NDAA.
"Betrayal" has of course been a supremely successful talking point for the extreme right ideologues. Recall "replacement theory." [None of this preposterous hokum merits the term "theory" of course, scientifically speaking.] The Dems are accused of sitting on their hands while evil people of color, women, even god help us "illegal" immigrants, steal the jobs of White Working Class folks. Emphasis on WHITE. I'm still waiting to see hordes of white suburbanites who deem themselves "Middle Class" storming into farm country and volunteering to pick the crops!! For sub-minimum wage and no bathroom breaks. I think I have a long wait, don'tcha think?
So, 250 years of this organized genocide and swinging a big stick and internment camps and nukes onto Japan and illegal wars against Korea, Vietnam- come on, you name the BETrAYALS, and we give a shit about the fees POTUS line-ups?
Sure, are you in the agnotology mode? Yankee Doodle Dandy Mood?

To my mind, Obama was simply the front man for the Health Insurance Industry, one of THE hugest, greediest and most exploitative fields around today.
I was a skeptic right up to the last few weeks of his 2008 campaign, but finally got on board in support of his single-payer promise. Except with the Trump Crime Family, it's Fredo rather Michael as the Don (ha - a play on words).
And Jared....he may be the most sinister of those advising Trump, given his ties to Netanyahu and Chabad Lubavitch.
Sinister is as sinister does! Should I copyright that phrase? :-)
Good idea - get it before anyone else does.

As I've been observing, it's the Magic of Marketing. :-( It works for really bad ideas at least as well as for treatments for ED!!

The single greatest gift that Bathhouse Barry has given us is the ndaa.
Hushing somebody away into a black van, hood on head no Miranda Rights no den Hasg treaty, just bye bye indefinitely (without any bye-byes).
A single biggest gift to us or the death panels that were built into Gingrich care.

Half the procedures being done in the United States today don't even have doctor's present when death cocktails are administered.
