One of the problems with the people who run the Democrat Party is they're used to having the MSM in their hip pocket. They think they can sell ice to Eskimos as the saying goes. Only this time the Eskimos said they'd rather have hot water heaters. I mean think of it. They veered off from running a guy with obvious dementia, in favor of a woman who had proven unpopular in getting voters to vote for her. And this is supposed to be the party of the "highly educated" people?? I guess education isn't all it's cracked up to be, if it causes you to lose common sense.

The 2 key ingredients Harris lacked were 1) charisma and 2) a message that resonated with the voters.

Charisma is necessary for a true leader. It is what makes people want to follow that person. Harris didn't have it. She didn't inspire. She was the candidate that the Party forced on the voters giving them no choice - and she got the votes she got because those voters didn't want Trump.

Other than her position on abortion and the fact that she was not Trump, she offered nothing of substance to the voters. She offered nothing that was going to improve the lives of average Americans. No solutions for issues like healthcare, global warming, education, homelessness, infrastructure, energy sufficiency, environmental destruction or money dominating politics. Furthermore she implicitly promised to continue supporting unpopular wars unleashed by her predecessor.

On the other hand, like it or not, Trump is a charismatic - and he had a message that implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) said "kick the bums out", which resonated with a large segment of the population who rightfully felt disenfranchised by the Democratic Party. It didn't really matter that there was nothing else of substance in Trump's message, that was sufficient - because voters were pissed off at what was being done and what was not being done by Democratic President (whose successor promised more of the same).

The bottom line is, you can't crap on people forever and get away with it. Sooner or later, they will rebel. The Democratic Party needs to learn that. (But I won't hold my breath.)

True, but they were few, whereas the millions who voted for him weren't crapped on by him.

And he's not my boy. If you had read previous posts you would have known I voted for Jill Stein.

Totally agree with you. Highly likely that we will see Harris 2.0 or Clinton 3.0 in 2028. If there is still anyone alive in this corner of the Universe.

My take on this election is very simple but well informed. Too many voters on either side are „interest“ voters who lack a real conscience. How can LGBTQ, just one example, be more important than military mayhem around the world? I guess that the great majority of my readers, mostly of the liberal orientation, are interest voters.

It's been said that Harris ran an Obama-style campaign (hopey, touchy, feely, etc.) but didn't have Obama's political skills. Investors call it "blue sky thinking", which Wiktionary defines as "thinking that is not grounded or in touch with the realities of the present."

Yep. Not-Trump was not enough. I think of that billboard near my home that said, "Trump is for Trump" and showed him looking in a mirror. Two pictures of him and his name twice, and that billboard was for the blue team!

The only good thing about Trump’s win is that he won’t creat chaos over ‘cheating’ and he won’t incite another insurrection overtly, but probably will covertly.

One does not know what a Harris presidency would have brought once she obtained office. I would have preferred that over what we do know, from history, what we will get from another Trump presidency, and it is not going to be good. I would have preferred Harris because of that.

OF COURSE it matters who we vote for …And who we HAVE THE OPTION to vote for is pertinent, too … Getting better candidates and platforms is always something we should be working to make happen ..

BUT, when you are faced with a stark reality — A Trump or a Harris — well, it also matters which one you choose. They are not the same.

Refusing to grab the one with whom we have a better chance of retaining our democracy strikes me as … well, performative. Not a functional plan, but “sending a message.” And in the end, self defeating. Sending a message, hmmph/

I hope the message has not been the metaphorical equivalent of placing it in a bottle and throwing it out to sea.

I hope we’re going to preserve our democracy, even though having Trump in office is going to devastate our atmosphere further and make climate change ever so much more destructive, will encourage more wealth to migrate into the pockets of corporate oligarchs, and will put millions of migrants’ lives in greater and greater jeopardy.

Not to mention, letting militant insurrectionists out of jail.

What a fun time we’re in for.

{Yes, today is probably a snarky day … and a sad one. Trump and Harris were not and are not equally reprobates. Stein was never a viable option for president, and over time, I lost respect for her inaction at finding an actually functional political role for herself. Your mileage may differ.}

Now, I am going to SERIOUSLY bite my tongue…}

Pat, the power of Zionism in America is awesome at all levels and Stein was hated by Zionists. Here in my small city, I am unable to get a comment posted in the small local paper that details the work of Zionists right here in town. From big donors who shut down pro-Palestinian protests on campus through MSM that has Zionists throughout, even Wolf Blitzer being a former IDF soldier, and on into our Congress and state legislatures as well there are Zionists ready and waiting to snuff out anything against Israel. I have 25 years of experience with this issue.

I support Gershon Baskin in Israel.

Expand full comment

Pat, you either support liberty and justice for all, or you support ethnic cleansing Israel. You cannot be a supporter of both, though this hypocritical stand is taken by innumerable Americans. Most outrageous is dual citizenship where, if one is a Jewish American, enjoying all the civil rights and freedom of the USA, one can also go to Israel and take land from the natives who have no rights, no freedom and are currently being slaughtered in great number after 76 years of their land being taken by a colony that imposed itself on them by force.

I choose liberty and justice for all, including Palestinians whose crime, just like it was with native-Americans, is to resist the colonizer. I reject colonization by a group that has found safety, acceptance and incredible success here in the US. The US stands isolated with Israel thanks to Zionist financial might in the US. Where do you stand?

You do not present me with a false duality and tell me I MUST take a side.

I support the efforts of Gershon Baskin. And I have been against the policies of Bibi since he first burst on the scene, riding on the reputation of his dead brother. Don’t think you know my mind .. you don’t. And you don’t dictate it to me, either.

Expand full comment

Pat, I am not dictating to you. You are letting emotion take you away in turning a question into a demand. Nothing could be further from liberty and justice for all than ethnic cleansing. I certainly do not know your mind or the mind of anyone who claims to hold both views. Your refusal to say which of the two you truly support only confirms hypocrisy. I ask you where you stand and say to you that I stand with liberty and justice for all as should any American - it is the foundation of our country and in the Pledge of Allegiance. Did you say the Pledge of Allegiance in grade school as I did? How do you square that with what Israel is doing with your (I assume you are American) weapons and armed forces? Is there any question I pose that you will answer?

My first statement above yours says where I stand. And other things I said, too. I support the work of Gershon Baskin in Israel. I repudiate Bibi Netanyahu and the positions of his coalition. When you pose questions that are like push polls, I will not answer them.

There is no such thing as "militant insurrectionists" in the USA.

There wasn't an insurrection on Jan 6th.

But there are many in jail for peacefully protesting. Political prisoners of the left.

This LEGAL immigrant does not see his life in jeopardy under Trump!

And after all, ALL Americans are immigrants.

What shocks me the most is how Democrat voters have been dragged to the political right by the Dems to the point where they have become very war friendly and don't seem to mind the censorship or police brutality against protesters. Not sure how the Blue Team voters square their supposed principles with their new, conservative outlook on just about everything. This self-destructive behavior leaves gobs of room for the Red Team and its voters to keep moving even more to the right. Where that ends is anyone's guess, but I predict plenty more war under Trump, since there is no opposition to it anywhere to be seen (except Jill Stein, who we aren't supposed to vote for because she isn't a Dem).

Jill Stein is a big nothing burger. A grifter. Just wasting folk's time.

In 2,000, Ralph Nader ran as the Green Party candidate, on the exact antiwar platform as Jill Stein did in this election.

He cited "a crisis of democracy" as his motivation to run. Sound familiar? LOL

The great man got 2.74% of the vote.

Stein keeps flogging the dead horse that is the Green Party, never getting >1.0% of the vote.

Why anybody would consider giving her 5-minutes of their precious time, let alone wasting their vote on her, is a great mystery to me.

She has even been a huge flop as a "Protest Vote".... moving the needle <1.00mm in 25-years

That shows a level of team blindness that is impossible to argue with. Let me ask you, are you in favor of wars? If not, why don't you support the anti-war candidates? Why denigrate them rather than the warmongers? Trump was quite adept a assassinating people like Solemani, and he pushed the war in Syria claiming that he wanted their oil. Trump is not the peace candidate, and his upcoming reactions to what is happening in Gaza and Ukraine will show that he isn't and hasn't ever been a peace candidate.

An interesting take this morning; the UK Telegraph is reporting the Democrats are blaming the arrogance of Biden for Harris' loss, by him staying in the race too long. It's just another variant of never blaming the candidate.

Chris Hedges was asked in his podcast yesterday about the future of the Republicans after Trump; he said he wasn't sure, as the R's are now a cult and cults tend not to survive after their leaders pass on. Without Trump, I think the true believers - not the angry working class - will fully emerge as their public face; the true believers are the Christian Evangelicals who are truly terrifying.

The Democrats, in our dysfunctional 'two-party' system, need to be able to counter them. But until the current DNC (under the Clintons and Obamas - and with both the big money donors) is rebuilt on values that don't see half the population as a 'basket of deplorables' or 'garbage', and can address the valid concerns of the electorate that has abandoned them, they - and we - screwed. And, voting for a Whitmer, Gruesome, Polis, or Shapiro will be just another silly exercise that changes nothing.

The 'old' Republican Party is doomed too after Trump exits; I could see it splitting into elements of a populist/libertarian party and a religiously conservative party (the latter having only regional state appeal in certain parts of the. country).

Robert Reich, like so many Democrats are writing today about what went wrong-what ever happened to the common good-Who Are We was the title of his posting today? So, I told him. Bob, you have lived in a mythical world with a story far from reality. America never really had a social contract. It's always had good people with the common good in mind, but its driving force, its stories of "success" are based on a narrow sickly individualism-a narrow version of freedom. The truer story is about domination- endless acquisitions-the disease of accumulating an endless more by opportunists. Musk and Trump are the American dream come true- opportunists that have merely taken advantage of everything they can in a nation, in a culture whose greatest value is winning-beating the other guy. America is mostly void of national identity based on fair sharing but of great individuals getting ahead of the other guy, getting as much as you can. You confuse "great men" being "charitable" with a social contract, with a nationalism based on fair sharing which would have the nation's wealth distributed not equally but more like it was actually made. Trump is the American dream. The American dream is a nightmare. Ask the indigenous people-where the real story of America began with taking full advantage-leverage- might is right- opportunity to remove the original nations of the original Americans off their land. Which of course is the story of the makings of Israel-a terrible idea of moving people off their native land-a dream of opportunism-a nightmare-a genocide of Palestinians.

America and Canada were foul projects to begin with- true reconstruction is needed for true reconciliation. Opportunism for concentration of wealth-for a unbalanced growth that left earth out of the balance out of the true costs is the reality we live with-a reality we may very well die without the radical reconstruction that Martin Luther King talked of. We don't need to be writing daily reactions to the daily chaos going on we need to be reading King and more than King we need to be listening the wisdoms of native elders who long ago described what happened for it is happening now and has never stopped happening.
