When times are good, people forget that our freedom and rights can be easily taken away if we do not work to preserve them. To believe that fascism was defeated by WWII was naive. Trump is the result of years of neo-liberalist polices that gutted the working class. Middle class people were okay with letting things slide, as long as they didn't suffer economically, and upper class people were gaining unprecedented wealth. Voters paid little attention and continued to support our two-party (actually uni-party) system, whose policies led to the corporate control of our government. Oligarchs now run our country. We are not on the precipice of authoritarian rule, it's already upon us.

Donald Trump is still living in the 1950s, and he is never going to get out of that mind trap. The entire anti-left, anti-socialist, anti-communist nonsense was always about corporatism and ending all workers rights in the US. It was never about "totalitarianism" or "dictatorship" in other countries, it was about corporate power and control over workers lives inside the US. Why do corporatists claim that socialist systems, like in Venezuela, are "dictatorships"? Because for corrupt business types, the government is dictating the terms, rather than the bankers and financiers dictating terms. It is why I have always maintained that corporate dictatorships are far worse than most governments as far as the people's wellbeing are concerned.
