When times are good, people forget that our freedom and rights can be easily taken away if we do not work to preserve them. To believe that fascism was defeated by WWII was naive. Trump is the result of years of neo-liberalist polices that gutted the working class. Middle class people were okay with letting things slide, as long as they didn't suffer economically, and upper class people were gaining unprecedented wealth. Voters paid little attention and continued to support our two-party (actually uni-party) system, whose policies led to the corporate control of our government. Oligarchs now run our country. We are not on the precipice of authoritarian rule, it's already upon us.
Jean, one shouldn't forget that US elites despised FDR and the New Deal, and there was at least "cocktail chatter" in 1933 to overthrow the government and install Smedley Butler as dictator, in the so-called "Business Plot". While long dismissed as a conspiracy theory, there is evidence that it may have been true - and the official government report was a coverup (just like JFK and 9/11).
Authoritarianism and Fascism have long been alive here in the U.S. When times were good, just as you said, the electorate grew complacent and self satisfied. But the forces of the Business Plot never went away. They quietly influenced - growing ever more powerful through the courts, media, and Congress and state governments. And now they have the tools of surveillance and control that allows the use of a demagogic imbecile like Trump to impose their form of rule.
One other point - if the "No Kings" day is the best the opposition to this can do - the game is over.
It is true that the fight against authoritarianism is nothing new. People are more propagandized and surveilled today than ever before, and it is harder for everyday people to see through the lies. I agree that the "No Kings" events offer no opposition. The powers that be are happy to encourage the people to let off a little steam and think they are making a difference. These events herd people right back into the two-party fiasco.
I strongly dissent from your view that the "No Kings" events--"Hate America" rallies, says Donald, proving that he and his brain trust are aware--are worthless. Sure, the Dems feel the need to participate, but I don't think they are in the lead. Much as the Liar-in-Chief might want us to believe otherwise. I think this is as close to a grassroots movement as we tend to see in this country. I strongly recommend "Meet John Doe" (1941) with a wonderful performance by the often wooden (IMO) Gary Cooper, and a wonderful (that word again!) turn by Walter Brennan!! Edward Arnold plays the leader of a Fascistic Big Business cabal seeking to oust FDR by force, thru co-opting the grassroots "John Doe Clubs" movement that 'John Doe' (Coop's character) unexpectedly finds himself at the head of. It all comes about because Barbara Stanwyck's character invented 'John Doe' to avoid being laid off by her newspaper employer. Well, enuf of that (these aren't really spoilers), I swear you need to watch this movie!! Doubtless American Fascists have despised it since its premier, and still do!!
The business plot was a fairly well documented historical event, including the fact that Smedley Butler testified against the plotters in congress. You can read about it in books like "The plots against the president" by Sally Denton. Smedley came to the rescue and stopped it in its tracks.
Right, like we'd never have a POTUS named Barack Hussein Obama, right?? :-) Anyhow, the plan was to have Smedley rally WW I veterans for the coup, not to become the new Boss. Gen. Butler had to be truly incensed by the coup plotters, because he admits in his slender volume "War is a Racket" that he never had a dissenting idea, an original thought, while he wore the uniform of USMC for decades, making Latin America safe for exploitation by US corporations. At one time, Smedley was the most highly decorated active duty member of the US Military. Most of his medals, of course, to "honor" his work to pacify peasants in Latin America, Haiti, etc.
Well, the turnout for "No Kings" days seems to be growing steadily, and exercising what remains of free speech IS important. The other option is to lend approval to the Emperor thru silence. There is no other form of opposition viable in this country, as the Fascists vastly outnumber progressives in "the domestic arms race," shall we say.
The problem is that if you can't get everyone to at least agree on one demand, I would have said the 1st amendment, you get what you got in a lot of places, street theater and dancing. They are easily dismissed and then forgotten.
The only way to stop what they're doing won't be big crowds with no demands - it's going to take a general strike that impacts the owners.
Absolutely, the end of so-called democracy here has already arrived. How else could a self-appointed emperor place himself genuinely above the law?? He just keeps winning from "within the system"--latest victory is finding an Appeals Court to approve sending troops to Portland--but if a court rules against him, he feels no obligation to obey. The System has utterly collapsed. Never has a POTUS more merited being impeached and removed, but success in that effort is so impossible, with GOP control of US Senate, that the Dems aren't even making the effort.
I should have mentioned that Mr. Lincoln suspended habeas corpus widely during the (first) US Civil War. The threat to what was left of the Union was very real, of course, with Washington DC crawling with agents of the CSA. Now the "threat" Trump rails on about is made up of straw men, phantoms, like "ANTIFA" and "Wokeness"!! Good Lord, Donald, have you forgotten that in a speech to Congress shortly after your inauguration--or was it in the formal Inaugural Address?--you proudly declared "Woke is gone. It's gone"??
Lincoln jailed a number of Copperheads (Democratic opponents) and newspaper editors, and perhaps several thousand others, into prison for years. It may have been a necessity - given the circumstances, but it does beg the question of what do you stand for if you have to violate the principles that the war is supposed to be about. I don't have a good answer to that.
Right, but like I said the Union was in very genuine jeopardy of being destroyed. My understanding is that Lincoln was a very reluctant opponent of slavery, but the struggle of the Industrial "North" to take control of the national economy away from the Agrarian "South" forced his hand. I suggest folks seek a copy of the writings of Marx and Engels (remember them?) on "The Civil War in the United States." Very interesting insights. They corresponded with a Gen. Wiedermeyer (splg.?) of the Union Army, a gentleman of German descent, while the war actually raged.
Corruption was the driving force behind the founding of America. We the people must continue the long fight for truth and justice. We will get there as long we continue to march!
The cell phones were a deliberate diversion and intentional dumbing down of society. The election of Donald Gump Trump and Dementia Biden solidified the intellectual caliber of this Country. There is not a modicum or truth anywhere and yet society has still not woken up. Common sense tell you, Covid and the subsequent lethal injection should have been the wake-up call, but still . . . . they keep beleiving. Amazing . . . .
You remind me that George Reeves, in his vintage TV portrayal of Superman, was said to fight for "Truth, Justice AND the American Way." The writers of that prologue never noticed that they seemed to be listing the first two virtues as separate from "the American Way." In the recent Superman movie, the phrase "the American Way" has been eliminated. A subtle bit of political commentary??
We kinda are in wwIII mode with China via Taiwan and in Russia via direct NATO and USA interventions with weaponry and Intel support on the ground in Ukraine.
Donald Trump is still living in the 1950s, and he is never going to get out of that mind trap. The entire anti-left, anti-socialist, anti-communist nonsense was always about corporatism and ending all workers rights in the US. It was never about "totalitarianism" or "dictatorship" in other countries, it was about corporate power and control over workers lives inside the US. Why do corporatists claim that socialist systems, like in Venezuela, are "dictatorships"? Because for corrupt business types, the government is dictating the terms, rather than the bankers and financiers dictating terms. It is why I have always maintained that corporate dictatorships are far worse than most governments as far as the people's wellbeing are concerned.
More so than dear Donald living in a 1950s time warp, he lives in a realm of sheer fantasy, where he is the all-wise all-powerful Emperor of the Universe. This insanity is the real menace to us and the rest of the world.
C'mon Forest Gump Trump is the greatest gimmick and charade to have ever served as POTUS. Even Stevie Wonder can see the man is intellectually and learning disabled, most likely on the spectrum. He couldn't even pronounce the President of Turkey but rather said:
“This gentleman from a place called Turkey is one of the most powerful in the world,” Trump said last week, referring to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, after the Palestinian militant group agreed to a ceasefire and hostage-release plan.
FYI I declared Trump to be mentally deranged a decade ago, when he first threw his hat in the POTUS ring. It was so obvious to me! The fact that he is a severe embarrassment to our country and its citizens in the eyes of any person on Earth retaining their own sanity does NOT mean he is less of a threat to us all. A "Killer Klown," one might say. "Killer Klowns from Outer Space," a c. 1988 movie, is vastly more entertaining than anything The Donald can present us with.
I think the term mentally deranged is more of an offensive phrase rather than an actual medical diagnoses, per se. It is abundantly clear the man suffers from severe ADHD. You can see how impulsive he is. It's also been written repeatedly he has absolutely no attention span whatsoever and it is almost impossible to keep him seated let alone focused in any type of meeting. Or the fact he cant sleep because he's pumped up on stimulants in addition to all the caffeine in the soda. Hence the middle of the night texts (although someone clearly overseer's him).
With regard to his intelligence, I would bet good money his IQ is borderline at best. Somewhere around 75-80 tops, if that!
As I've stated repeatedly elsewhere, Trump is the learning disabled kid all parents back then were deeply ashamed of. I believe because of his fathers wealth and status within the community, everyone ignored it and actually praised the young boy. Hence the birth of his megalomania and removal from all reality. He went from being the learning disabled kid to the total jerk at all the clubs that buys everyone drinks while surrounded by whores and sluts. The man has spent his entire life buying friends.
Although I think deep down inside he truly does know how ignorant he is. Imagine being amongst a group of intellectuals and not having a clue as to what they're talking about? You can only keep him shielded for so long. I can also imagine the hilarity amongst world leaders at the magnitude of his stupidity. His demise will come because he actually believes his own press = Baby Jane Trump and will leave in cuffs and or a straightjacket.
Most POTUS are all the same. Bush was just as stupid vehemently swearing during a cabinet meeting it was Sweden and not Switzerland that was neutral. He also never stopped drinking as you can see how massively he's aged in addition to how he looked the morning after during all his public appearances. It's how VP-C had full control over him and kept his father at bay.
Obama was another fraud. It was Bill Clinton who confirmed his intelligence when he called him the greatest fairy tale ever told. Mr. 57 States and Austria has it own language. Corpse (repeatedly) instead of Army Corps of Engineers during a speech.
Everyone knows POTUS is nothing more than a face puppet but they hit gold with Forest Gump Trump. His followers are just as dumb and delusional as he is.
Frankly, I doubt that the Emperor has any actual friends. Just butt-kissing sycophants and obedient underlings. Some linguist reviewed a lot of footage of The Donald speaking and concluded he speaks on level of sophistication of a 4th-Grader!! He is very much like a mob godfather in demanding absolute loyalty. His campaign to take down anyone of some prominence who has criticized/opposed him is stunningly childish. Emotionally he's about 6 years old, I think. I'd love to see him in handcuffs some day, but that is NOT gonna happen. I also doubt the straitjacket scenario. I think his body will simply give out, worn down day to day. It consumes a lot of energy to be Hater-in-Chief! After his exit, the nation will still be under the control of Project 2025, so gloomy clouds will continue to occlude the sunlight for some time to come.
China, in the early years after the Revolution's 1949 triumph, I dare say was far more democratic than the US has been in eons. Actually, I'll add the Russian Revolution as well, prior to Stalin's ascension to control. Representatives to congresses were elected from among the rank and file sailors, soldiers and urban industrial workers. Hell, no one had the money to launch a publicized campaign for election!
I have long been pointing out that "conspiracy theory" itself is a flaming OXYMORON. A theory is a Science-based attempt to explain some natural phenomenon, preferably using experiments the outcome of which can be duplicated by other scientists. Where is the "Science" in Alex Jones's claim that there was no shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, that the Clintons were running a kiddie sex ring out of a pizzeria in Wash. DC, etc. etc. ad nauseam??
"He has long shown contempt for the Constitution he swore to uphold."
It's a breeze for a demagogue to show contempt for the Constitution when the citizenry are largely ignorant of the Constitution and are trained like dogs to yelp and snarl at anything they don't like.
The 60s were pretty bad for young males. They could be forced to enlist in the military. Once there they would be sent off to fight in a foreign land (58,000 plus were killed there). Resistance could land you in prison. Many fled the country. And then of course there were the race riots. Tens of thousands of businesses destroyed. Cities in flames. A violent time.
Meanwhile back in the present, Admiral Alvin Holsey, the Commander of the US Southern Command, has announced his retirement, one year into what is normally a three-year assignment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjtgDKmPvoU
The left spends all its time demonizing Trump, and yet, this administration has yet to ignore and court orders, choosing to fight them through the system. The last administration ignored court orders. It also ignore bodily autonomy, and fired people for standing up for it. It ignored privacy, religious freedoms, and imparted censorship upon its “enemies” via pressure on social media companies. It debarked people it didn’t like, and pressured Silicon Valley towards their choices of “winners” in AI (amongst others). In fact, it did everything they accuse the current administration, while claiming this administration is fascist.
The programming is complete. For many on the left “up is down”, “wrong is right”, and their willing to take ridiculous stances like down Tylenol while pregnant just because this administration (accurately & scientifically) tells such women not to take it.
I’ve long said if you don’t believe in something, you’ll soon believe almost anything. And that’s where we are now with the left. Any media that demonizes Trump, no matter how outrageous or what the lie, is immediately believed.
No wonder the Democrats can’t make it over 30% approval ratings. The sane people are walking away, leaving the faithfully brainwashed as the “true believers “. Their new religion is one of lies and half-truths.

Thanks for mentioning the "Business Plot", as I learned a part of history that I was unaware of. Smedley Butler acted to expose the plot to Congress, he only pretended to go along with it so that he could get the details. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/coup-jan6-fdr-new-deal-business-plot-1276709/

This is the first time in recent years I have seen the words baseless conspiracy theories used appropriately.
