The failure of American MICC weapons systems in Ukraine just posted helps explain why this “powerful GOP Senator Calls for Massive Surge in Defense Spending”...:
The U.S. accounts for about 40% of all defense spending in the world, but one leading Republican lawmaker is warning that isn’t enough to counter the threats the country now faces.
Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the senior Republican on the Armed Services Committee, is CALLING FOR THE U.S TO INCREASE ITS DEFENSE SPENDING BY $55 BILLION NEXT YEAR, ABOVE THE $895 BILLION CAP AGREED TO BY THE WHITE HOUSE AND CONGRESS, AND TO KEEP RAISING MILITARY OUTLAYS UNTIL THEY EQUAL 5% OF THE COUNTRY’S GROSS DOMESTIC — AN AMOUNT EXCEEDING $1 TRILLION A YEAR.
In an opinion piece published Wednesday by The New York Times [ https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/29/opinion/us-military-war.html ], Wicker argues that the military capabilities of the U.S. have atrophied, even as China, Russia and Iran have expanded their armed forces and become increasingly aggressive. "MOST AMERICANS DO NOT REALIZE THE SPECTER OF GREAT POWER CONFLICT HAS RISEN AGAIN," he writes.
Wicker’s proposal would increase the defense budget to about $950 billion in the 2025 fiscal year, or roughly 2.9% of GDP. Over the next five to seven years, defense spending would continue to rise until it hits 5% of GDP, or more than $1.4 trillion given the current size of the economy. DEFENSE SPENDING HASN’T BEEN THAT HIGH RELATIVE TO THE SIZE OF THE ECONOMY SINCE THE MASSIVE BUILDUP DURING THE REAGAN ADMINISTRATION AND THE FIRST GULF WAR UNDER PRESIDENT GEORGE H.W. BUSH.
"This will enable the United States to fix our failing defense infrastructure, field a new generation of equipment, and maintain American technological leadership," Wicker says in a 50-page report on the matter obtained by Bloomberg [ https://aboutbgov.com/beeK ].
Specifically, Wicker would direct the extra money toward new military technologies, improved maintenance of existing equipment, and more weapons. The Navy would grow significantly to 357 ships and the Air Force would add at least 340 more planes.
The increase would not have to be permanent, as long as the military-industrial base is built back up. "Ideally, devoting five percent of GDP to defense spending in the near future will not be necessary for very long, but it would certainly pay dividends far beyond five years," Wicker says. "This defense buildup would set up the U.S. military for sustained success over the next two to three decades."
The alternative, according to Wicker, is military weakness that would invite aggression. "Regaining American strength will be expensive," he says. "But fighting a war — and worse, losing one — is far more costly."
UKRAINE WAR RIPS VEIL OFF OF US WEAPONS SUPERIORITY by Andrew Cockburn / Responsible Statecraft 29 May 24
*** Many of the failures, including the HIMARS, have been due to their reliance on GPS ***
As Russian forces steadily advance in the Kharkiv region, it is becoming ever more clear that THE UKRAINE WAR HAS BEEN A DISASTER FOR THE U.S. DEFENSE MACHINE, AND NOT JUST BECAUSE OUR AID HAS FAILED TO SAVE UKRAINE FROM RETREAT AND POSSIBLE DEFEAT. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE WAR HAS PITILESSLY EXPOSED OUR DEFENSE SYSTEM’S DEEP, UNDERLYING, FAULTS.
CRITICS HAVE LONG MAINTAINED THAT OUR OBSESSION WITH TECHNOLOGICALLY COMPLEX WEAPONS INEVITABLY YIELDS UNRELIABLE SYSTEMS PRODUCED IN LIMITED NUMBERS BECAUSE OF THEIR PREDICTABLY HIGH COST. THEY ARE FURTHERMORE LIKELY TO FAIL IN COMBAT BECAUSE OF THE MILITARY’S LACK OF INTEREST IN ADEQUATE TESTING (LEST REALISTIC TESTS REVEAL SERIOUS SHORTCOMINGS AND THEREBY THREATEN THE BUDGET.) THE UNFORGIVING OPERATIONAL TEST PROVIDED BY THE UKRAINE WAR HAS SHOWN THAT THE CRITICS WERE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. Successive “game changing” systems - such as the Switchblade drone, the M-1 Abrams tank, Patriot air defense missiles, the M777 howitzer, the Excalibur guided 155 mm artillery round, the HIMARS precision missile, GPS-guided bombs, and Skydio drones endowed with artificial intelligence, were all dispatched to “the fight,” as the military like to call it, with fanfare and high expectations.
All were destined to fail for reasons rooted in the fundamental problems cited above. The $60,000 Switchblade drone, produced in limited numbers due to cost, proved useless against armored targets and was quickly discarded by Ukrainian troops in favor of $700 Chinese commercial models ordered online. The $10 million Abrams tank not only proved distressingly vulnerable to Russian attack drones but in any case broke down repeatedly and was soon withdrawn from combat, though not before the Russians put several out of action and captured at least one, which they took to Moscow and added to a display of Nato weaponry in a Moscow park that included an M777 howitzer and other items of NATO hardware.
The M777 cannon, though touted for its accuracy, has proved too delicate for the rough conditions of sustained combat, with barrels regularly wearing out and requiring replacement in Poland far from the front lines . Notoriously, its 155 mm ammunition has been in short supply. Thanks to the consolidation of the U.S. defense industry into a small number of monopolies, an ill-judged policy eagerly promoted since the Clinton Administration, U.S. domestic production of 155 mm shells is reliant on a single aging General Dynamics plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania, which is struggling to meet its targets.
President Zelensky has been loudly demanding more Patriot launchers and missiles to defend Kharkiv, which is curious, given the apparent ease with which the Russians have targeted Patriots defending Kyiv, and the system’s declining effectiveness against Russian ballistic missiles. HIMARS long range missiles indeed had a deadly effect on high value Russian targets, such as ammunition dumps, but the Russians adapted by dispersing and camouflaging such dumps and other likely targets.
TAKE IT FROM A UKRAINIAN: WESTERN SYSTEMS “WORTHLESS.”
Strikingly, many of the failures of U.S. weapons, including the HIMARS, in Ukraine have been due to their reliance on a highly vulnerable guidance system: GPS. The Russians, who have long devoted intense care and attention to electronic warfare, have proven increasingly adept at jamming GPS. This has been most witheringly expressed by Maria Berlinskaya, a pioneer in Ukraine’s use of drones and head of the country’s aerial reconnaissance support center, who recently stated that “most Western systems have proven to be [worthless]” thanks to Russian jamming.
On June 5th, the Global Footprint Network will announce EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY 2024.
EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY marks the date when humanity has exhausted nature’s budget for the year. For the rest of the year, we are maintaining our ecological deficit by drawing down local resource stocks and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We are operating in “Overshoot.”
In 2023, EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY fell on August 2. We continue to bust Earth's Budget.
BIDEN GIVES UKRAINE PERMISSION TO STRIKE INSIDE RUSSIA WITH US WEAPONS by Dave DeCamp / antiwar.com 30 May 24
*** The step marks a significant escalation in the proxy war and risks provoking a major Russian response ***
The Biden administration has given Ukraine permission to use US-provided weapons to hit targets inside Russian territory, POLITICO reported Thursday, a step that marks a significant escalation of the proxy war.
US officials said Ukraine will be able to use US weapons to shoot down Russian missiles inside Russia that are fired toward Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. They will also be able to hit Russian military units that are just over the border in Russia’s Belgorod Oblast.
The US officials insisted Ukraine would not be able to use US-provided missiles for attacks on civilian infrastructure or for long-range attacks on military targets that are deep inside Russia.
“The president recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine is able to use US weapons for counter-fire purposes in Kharkiv so Ukraine can hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them,” a US official told POLITICO. The official insisted the US still would not support long-range strikes on Russian territory.
Ukraine needs support from the US for targeting when it fires US-provided missiles, which means the US will now be directly supporting strikes inside Russia. The escalation risks provoking a major response from Russia, as Moscow recently warned the UK that it would target British military sites in Ukraine and “beyond” if British missiles were used in strikes on Russian territory. Over the past year, both US and British missiles have been used to target Crimea.
The news comes a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted that the US was preparing to change the policy, saying the US will “adapt and adjust” when asked if Urkaine could strike Russian territory with US weapons.
The New York Times previously reported that the restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US weapons were put in place as part of President Biden’s plans to “avoid World War III.” But throughout the war, the US and other NATO countries have taken escalations they previously ruled out due to fear of provoking Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any NATO countries that let Ukraine strike Russia with their weapons would face “major consequences.”
Tell You what, "Friend": Why don't YOU start YOUR own Substack? That way YOU could control completely what me or anybody else is allowed to post on it.
And Thanks for the "social media do's and don'ts." Just think: If You had Your very own Substack, You could directly control so-called "impolite and argumentative behavior" to Your complete satisfaction.
And to be perfectly frank, i really don't care one way or another What would and would not be more "enjoyable" to You, or what You would be more interested in.
Does that meet Your requirements for telling You what exactly i'm going to say, saying it, and then telling You what i just said?
And this just in: Prosecutors 34, Trump 0.
Heh. As You like to put it: "Let the gnashing of teeth, wailing, and caterwauling of all the MAGAts begin... .

And there are no words that are not obscenities to adequately describe Trumper VP-Wannabe Nikki Haley's scrawling "FINISH THEM" on US-built artillery shells headed to Gaza. NONE.
Anybody with any doubts whatsoever that The Decline of The American Empire has ended, and that The Fall has begun in full force needs to pull their individual and collective heads out of their political "Leaders'" assholes, and take a look around.
And ask themselves what they plan to do when what America is perpetrating in Gaza and Ukraine starts happening here in the United States itself. Because no matter who the next Supreme Leader of the United States is, Ukraine and Gaza are the future of this Nation.
And the question now is no longer "Will the United States survive to celebrate its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, 765 days from today?" Nor is it even "Can it survive?"
Given what the United States has perpetrated and perpetuated all over this Planet since Hiroshima and Nagasaki ~ starting with Indochina for the French, then Korea, then Indochina for America, then Afghanistan in 1979, Central America in the 80s, Iraq in 1991, 9/11 and "The Forever War" it spawned in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Saddam's "WMDs," Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and so forth, and now in Ukraine and Gaza... .
Given all that, the Question is now not even "Will or Can it survive it?
The Question is: "SHOULD it survive? And if so, Why?"
“RED LINE” is one of the most abused phrases in contemporary foreign policy language. It is as meaningless as the constantly used “rules based order” by the western hypocritical political establishment.
It feels as if we're living in a farce of a real society with 'red line' tropes and buffoons in charge. Unfortunately, it's not a farce, and real death and destruction threaten us all - with buffoons and monsters actually in charge.
