The late American historian Stephen Ambrose (not my favorite of American historians) gave the book high praise for being “… easily the best single volume on the American experience yet produced.” Yesterday, I ran across a quote by general Patton: “Gentlemen, I have come to the conclusion that we have fought on the wrong side. This entire war we should have fought with the fascists against the communists and not the other way around.” Truman expressed something similar in July 1941: “I the Russians win, we should support the Germans. If the Germans win, we should support the Russians.” My paraphrase. That puts to rest the JUST WAR military ideology. The irony is that today’s USA is supporting the Ukrainian fascist regime. I think Gorbachev had something to say about American diplomatic duplicity - promises made and not kept.
