Certainly a good satire. On a more serious note. Good historians are very adverse to draw parallels to past events. But it might be worthwhile to look at what destroyed the Roman Republic (not the Empire) in the first century BC. It was ambition and financial corruption. It started with the problem of political polarization between the Optimates and the Populares and the generals from Marius to Octavian (later known as Augustus) who exploited the tensions that had evolved by the late second century BC when the Gracchi brothers Tiberius and Gaius who as popular tribunes tried to bring about financial reforms. It resulted in their assassination by the reactionary elite. The political system of the Republic was virtually destroyed, though the facade remained. The true power rested with the “imperator” - emperor - and a very small group of very rich senators.
